Dear *|FNAME|*

It's been a while since our last newsletter, but as the pandemic's restrictive impacts have eased we've been hard at work with communities, places and collections across Victoria.
  • We've been in Flemington collaborating with filmmaker Malcolm McKinnon on an oral history project for the Flemington Kensington Community Legal Centre.
  • Our Neighbourhood Postcards for the month (now individual places rather than long walks) tell tales of a basketball court, horticultural hall and radio station.
  • We're keen to tell you about two truly amazing courses we completed last year, thanks to AIATSIS and AMaGA, and encourage everyone to consider doing them too.
  • And some extras...
Stay safe, happy reading, and happy International Women's Day: "Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive." [https://www.internationalwomensday.com/]

Keep an eye out for more Neighbourhood Postcards this month on places in Victoria that demonstrate why IWD is a mark of respect as much as it is for advocacy and celebration.

FLEMINGTON KENSINGTON COMMUNITY LEGAL CENTRE
'40 years challenging the system' is our latest oral history project with a booklet of stories (click on the image), a video by Malcolm McKinnon of Reckless Eye Productions, and a webpage. The stories are awe-inspiring for their courage, resilience and determination and we encourage you to read, watch, listen and appreciate the enormity of the FlemKen Community Legal Centre's achievements over the last 40 years.
"We're continually pushing for systemic change...and the battles are often chosen for us by the people who walk through our door"
NEIGHBOURHOOD POSTCARDS
The basketball courts on the Flemington housing estates (a story from our FlemKen project above).

A former radio broadcasting site in Ashley Street, Braybrook, one of the most powerful in the world in its day.

Horti Hall, home to the Australian Secular Society, the Dr Who Fan Club, Victorian Opera and many others, as well as the original gardeners of Victoria.

CULTURAL COMPETENCIES - IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN
We anticipated having our eyes opened by two courses we undertook last year designed by the Koorie Heritage Trust and by AIATSIS. But we did not anticipate receiving something so generous and thought-provoking in its approach to teaching. We encourage you to read about them here and consider doing these courses yourself.

AND ANOTHER THING...
With FlemKen in mind, here's a reminder of our High Court podcasts from last year, particularly Part 2: The Debate, which tells a great story about the protests against the $$$$$$ spent on the High Court opening, considered to be better directed towards community legal centres.

And for a taste of history you might enjoy this timeline of Australian food. We discovered History At Work has been around for as long as ‘the great vanilla slice triumph’ – what are your triumphs?
