RACV Club

In an oral history project to prepare for their 100th anniversary in 2003 I interviewed over 40 members and staff of the Club. I also wrote a series of articles based on themes that came out of these interviews for publication in the bimonthly RACV Club News.

I spoke to a barber who had cut and coiffed members in his old fashioned barbershop in the old Clubhouse for several decades. He knew everything there was to know about anyone you might want to know about!

To understand how the longstanding friendships and activities had developed in the Club I was invited to join a wine tasting group for their bimonthly lunch. The food was delicious and I was extremely impressed with their sommelier-like knowledge of wine. The members had clearly developed a strong bond and were very welcoming and eager to talk with me, but it was a funny day - being a men-only group I was not only of the wrong gender but was eight months pregnant at the time so couldn't even drink!
